Today is International Day of Families - a day to remember the importance of family, and the unconditional love and support that families provide.
The term 'family' has certainly evolved over time from the traditional view of a mother and a father and their children. Although this image may be the one conjured up automatically when we think of family, I think there is much more to it than having bodies occupying these particular positions.
Can we take a moment to connect with the feelings of family? The positive expectations of family? For me, these include a feeling of safety, unconditional love and support, and unwavering mutual trust. For you these may resonate, or your expectations may differ. Therein lies the beauty of the flexibility of the term 'family'. And therein we find solace, in that perhaps these positive emotions come from people outside of our biological families. Perhaps we have friends who we feel are more of a family to us than the people we grew up with and shared a roof with.
Wherever you are able to find your feelings of safety, love, support, and trust - let's celebrate that today. Happy International Day of Families to you all.
