Is life coaching for you? My humble opinion is yes. At some point in most of our lives, we could use a helping hand, a nudge in the right direction, a reminder of how special we are.
I must admit that until my life coach training began, I was not even sure what a life coach did, let alone feel that I could benefit from their guidance. It wasn't until I began my 9-month training did I really begin to understand what it is all about.
With my background in clinical psychology and behaviour therapy, I began to tire of sending my 'patients' home at the end of a rigid treatment plan that ultimately came with some sort of a label. I wholly believe that the more clinical side of psychology is hugely powerful and beneficial for a significant part of the population, but at the same time, I found myself wondering, "What's next?". Well, it turns out that life coaching is a pretty good answer to that question.
My particular journey led me to positive psychology life coaching. Positive psychology is, basically, the study of what works. I like to describe it with the analogy of a spider in its web. Somewhere along the path of creating this web, the spider has become trapped in it. The beginning of a positive psychology life coaching engagement is like cutting that web and seeing what falls first. A clarification of our values, our strengths, our pleasures, and ultimately our life goals, whether short-term or long-term.
Life coaching is not a clinician-patient dynamic - it is a partnership. I see my role as a guide, and as a companion, as I provide the framework for my clients to start to see: 1) How they can create the best path for themselves, 2) How to navigate this path to best overcome inevitable obstacles, and 3) How to continue to be motivated in all of their endeavours well beyond the last time they walk out of my consultation room.
And now I pose the question to you - is life coaching for you?
