"The Global Day provides an opportunity to appreciate all parents in all parts of the world for their selfless commitment to children and their lifelong sacrifice towards nurturing this relationship."
When my eldest was born, I was super prepared for the pregnancy bit. I read all the books, got familiar with an array of birth stories, researched doctors and hospitals and breathing techniques, and memorized the hospital layout. I won't go into the details of her birth day here - but what I will say is that it is absolutely true what they say - when a child is born, a mother is born too. And let's take that further to where it should be - PARENTS are born on that day. I didn't read any books, or get familiar with parenting stories, nor study a manual.
The day my eldest was born, the levels of oxytocin were high and we were surrounded by medical professionals ensuring our health, comfort and safety. Two days later, we went home. And one moment after the next, we realized that we had no idea what we were doing. From then on, ensued a series of moments of self-doubt, of confusion, of guilt for not 'having the answer'. Scattered among those moments, were rays of ease and confidence which predominantly arose from following our instincts. They arose from letting go of trying to categorize our parenting choices into whether they were 'right' or 'wrong' according to so-and-so.
There was freedom in that gradual realization that every single parenting dynamic is different and unique. That every parenting moment has the potential to be different and unique. That freedom and family wellbeing are not helped by external pressures to parent in a certain way.
Today, let's take a moment to take stock of what is really good about our parenting dynamic, our children, our families, and even our own parents (and in-laws too?!). Let's celebrate the achievement of just being a parent, without judgement or critique. Just for one day, give yourself permission to give yourself a pat on the back, mums and dads. You're a parent - well done!
